Changes to Over the Counter Medication Policy

Effective immediately SDPC will no longer administer Tums, cough drops, Benadryl, Albuterol, or any other over-the-counter medications (OTC) to students without signed parent permission and the parent supplying the medication to the school.. Some over-the-counter medications have previously been included in district standing orders, but under directive from the Board of Nursing and according to the Nurse Practice Act and Medical Practice Act, we will no longer be able to keep stock medications in our health rooms and school first aid kits. As always, parents may sign a medication permission form and send OTC medications to school to be used for their student. Attached are the notes that I gave the school nurses today as I explained the reasoning. Several surrounding districts have already put this into practice.
